Akademske 1994/95. godine svoj rad obnavljaju Elektrotehnički i Poljoprivredni fakultet u Lukavici (opština Istočno Novo Sarajevo), Filozofski fakultet u Palama, Mašinski fakultet u Vogošći (danas u Lukavici, opština Istočno Novo Sarajevo), Pravni fakultet u Ilidži (danas u Palama), Muzička akademija u Ilidži (danas u Lukavici, opština Istočno Novo Sarajevo), a u Foči s radom započinje i Duhovna akademija Svetog Vasilija Ostroškog.

Establishment of the University of East Sarajevo

The establishment of the University of East Sarajevo is linked to the decision of the National Assembly of the Republic of Srpska of 14 September 1992, by which faculties, academies and colleges were separated from the University of Sarajevo and afliated to the University in Sarajevo of the Republic of Srpska. Tis historic decision by which our University was re-established and rightly proclaimed successor to the University of Sarajevo, meant invaluable contribution to the preservation and development of the educational and scientifc and academic research in the Republic of Srpska.

Made afer the outbreak of the civil war in BiH, in the difcult circumstances in which hundreds of teachers and teaching associates, as well as thousands of students of Serb nationality were forced to abandon their homes and universities in Sarajevo, Mostar and Tuzla, this decision has created the conditions for most of them not to leave the area of the Republic of Srpska and enabled teachers and students to continue their education and professional development.

Following the decision to establish a process of higher education in this part of the Republic of Srpska, several faculties of the University of East Sarajevo, including our Faculty of Economics, started with teaching assignments in 1993/94. In addition to the Faculty of Economics, whose work was restored in Pale, the teaching classes were carried out at the Faculty of Medicine and the Faculty of Dentistry which re-established their activities in Foča, the Faculty of Technology in Zvornik, which re-established its work afer separation from the University of Tuzla, and the Teacher Training Faculty (now Faculty of Education), in Bijeljina.

In the academic year 1994/95, other higher education institutions re-established their work: Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Faculty of Agriculture in Lukavica (Municipality of East Novo Sarajevo), Faculty of Phylosophy in Pale, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering in Vogošća (now in Lukavica, the municipality of East Novo Sarajevo), Faculty of Law in Ilidža (now in Pale), Academy of Music in Ilidža (now in Lukavica, the municipality of East Novo Sarajevo), and the Academy of Orthodox Teology of Saint Basil of Ostrog opened its doors in Foča.

In the academic year 1995/96, the Academy of Fine Arts and the Faculty of Production and Management started to work in Trebinje, and the Faculty of Physical Education (now the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports) in Pale.

The Faculty of Economics in Brčko, which re-established its activities upon separation from the higher education institutions of the University of Tuzla, became part of the University of East Sarajevo in the academic year 1997/98.

The Faculty of Trafc Engineering in Doboj, which developed from the Technical College, became a member of the University of East Sarajevo in the academic year 2005/2006. Tat same year, the Faculty of Foreign Trade (now the Faculty of Business and Economics) developed afer the transformation of the College of Foreign Trade in Bijeljina and began with the teaching process as a member of the University of East Sarajevo.

Since 2008, the Faculty of Dentistry was transformed in the study program of the Faculty of Medicine in Foča. At present, the University of East Sarajevo has seventeen organizational units, fifteen faculties and two academies.

Today, more than 15,000 full-time students in 38 academic programs and more than 1,000 post-graduate students are studying at our University, in ten university centers.

Rektori UIS-a

Sarajevska bogoslovija matica UIS-a

Sarajevo Seminary Stem of the University of East Sarajevo

Te University of East Sarajevo, inherited also the tradition of the frst higher education institutions established in BiH. It refers, frst of all, to Sarajevo Seminary, which had been founded in 1882 and as the frst Serb higher school in BiH, is a kind of stem of the University of East Sarajevo.

Modern history of the Sarajevo Seminary began in 1991, when the Synod of the Serbian Orthodox Church made the decision to initiate the process of restitution of Sarajevo Seminary property and to establish the Spiritual Academy in Sarajevo. Due to the civil war in BiH, implementation of the decision was postponed until 1994 when the Academy of Orthodox Teology of Saint Basil of Ostrog was established in Foča (Srbinje, as it was called at the time), when it began to perform teaching classes as a member of the University of East Sarajevo.
